The world of Inhuman is full of creatures from the myths and legends of humanity. But as detailed through the history of the Blooded, the reality of the creatures are not quite what the myths of the Human world map to, exactly. But what, exactly, are the vampires, the Blooded? There are some concepts that are true because of the concept of the monomyth, and there are deviations from the myths from around the world, myths sometimes spawned by other beings such as Bygones or Fae.

What is a vampire?

The Blooded have existed for just over 2000 years, and while there is no modern scientific vernacular to describe all of their traits and capabilities, the scholars of House Axia and the mystics of House Claudia have catalogued much information.

  • Vampires are immortal.
    • Myth and fact. The Gift of Pluto grants the Blooded immortality of form, animating their dead bodies with the power of the Underworld, and locking them into the form that they had when they were brought Into the Blood. The Blooded will never age nor die of old age, diseases or other natural causes. A vampire can be killed, however; the destruction of their body breaking the link between their form and the Gift of Pluto, sending them to the Underworld. And with the right rituals, a vampire may be able to return to their undead existence.
  • Vampires must feed on the blood of the living.
    • Myth and fact. The vampiric form is sustained by what is called vitalis, the life force of the living. This is the necessary part of the Gift of Diana's hunting prowess; vitalis keeps their immortal bodies maintained, providing the 'vital spark' that Pluto could not return to Titus. Vampires with insufficient vitalis will eventually show their true age and form (for example, one who has been In the Blood for 300 years may present as a dessicated, mummified corpse). The simplest way to access this life-force is by drinking the blood of the living, taking their own vitalis into the vampire's form to maintain their spark. Vampires use this stolen life-force to maintain their immortal forms, and to power their supernatural abilities. Some vampires have developed or co-opted other methods, such as drinking the breath of the living.
  • Those who are bitten by a vampire, become a vampire.
    • Myth. The act of bringing someone Into the Blood requires an exchange of blood, as a human must die with significant vampiric blood in their body (typically being purposefully fed such) to be returned to life as a Blooded.
  • Vampires are undead.
    • Fact. Though their bodies mimic most all of the functions of a living being, their bodies are corpses reanimated by the Gift of Pluto and sustained by the vitalis that they steal from others. While this makes them undead, the functional immortality of the Gift of Pluto maintains aspects of their living forms: they can eat and drink (though they do not need to), they breathe and blink (though they have no need of breath beyond talking), have sex (though they cannot pass on the life necessary to MAKE life), and do most all of the other things that the living can do, though some Blooded of significant age do lose the mental wherewithal or desire to do these things (it's not an uncommon sight for an old vampire to have lost the reflex to blink or breath without necessity, for example).
  • Vampires have no souls/their souls are as dead as their bodies.
    • Myth. Though there are Bygones that meet this concept that may have spawned some vampire myths, the soul is an intrinsic part of the Gift of Pluto: it is married to the body via the Gift of Pluto, granting their functional immorality. The soul remains what it is aas a human, and the vampire continues to have their human thoughts and emotions, though parts of their emotions may be amplified (such as the drive to ennui felt by Titus' descendants, or the intense anger felt by those descended from Licenia).
  • Vampires are destroyed by fire, sunlight, silver or a stake through the heart.
    • Myth and fact. A stake through the heart will harm a vampire, but will not kill them, nor will it have any other real effect. Sunlight, silver and fire are considered banes by the scholars of House Axia, and are three of the sure-fire ways to do significant harm to (and in many cases, destroy) a vampire, as their undead forms suffer signficant damage due to the Curses of Apollo, Diana and Orcus.
  • Vampires are repelled by crosses/garlic/running water and have other esoteric weaknesses.
    • Myth and fact. The Blooded are not intrinsically repelled by those items mentioned, nor do they succumb to the more esoteric weaknesses of other 'vampire' myths. However, this varies by individual vampires; some may be repelled by religious objects, some may cast no shadow or have no reflection or be possessed of other 'witches' marks' or other one-off flaws. House Claudia theorizes that these unusual traits are a result of the psyche of the human manifesting the Curse of Orcus in some unusual manner.
  • Vampires have all manner of supernatural abilities.
    • Fact. The vitalis that maintains the life of a Blooded can be utilized in a variety of manners, such as superhuman strength, speed and resilience; supernatural force of personality; mental commands; glamours and illusions; and a plethora of others.
  • Vampires are extremely territorial.
    • Myth. While vampires are territorial, it is not an intrinsic part of their nature. Rather, their territorialism comes from their need for feeding stock, and the inevitable conflicts with other, much more territorial supernaturals.
  • Vampires are extremely urban.
    • Fact. Due to the nature of the Republic of the Night, the city-state setup of vampire society, and the need for people to feed upon, vampires are most often in cities. This, combined with other hostile supernaturals in many areas, tends to see the Blooded congregate in cities and away from the wild and rural places of the world.
